What is Baptism?

Baptism is a big step in the life of a follower of Jesus. In fact, Jesus was baptized himself. Not because he needed to repent, but because he wanted to provide an example for us and identify with people like you and me. And then in Matthew 28, Jesus talked about baptism in a passage called “The Great Commission”.

He said this: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19–20).

Should I Get Baptised?

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward reality. People that take this step have already committed to Jesus, so being baptized in front of their family and church community gives them an opportunity to express that commitment to everyone. It’s also a time of celebration with the people you are following Jesus with and a huge step forward for everyone that participates.

What Happens If I Get Baptised?

Baptism is a way that we identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. When we go under water we are showing how the old version of us is dying and the new creation is coming out of the water.

Baptism is also an opportunity to be filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to do the things Jesus did. The Spirit filled Jesus after his baptism and that empowering presence was the source of his power during his public ministry. The same Spirit is present with us for empowerment when we are baptized and we pray for a fresh filling for everyone right after they come up out of the water.
